Go-to song/TV show/movie…
I don’t have just one song, show, or movie that is my go-to. I love all forms and kinds. One of my favorite things to do is watch YouTube. Here I can watch all my favorite shows, listen to music, and learn all kinds of new things. Youtube Is my go-to because there is a vast array of content and I can access it on my own time.
If you could work on any wedding anywhere in the world, what would it be?
This is such a hard question because there are so many places in the world I would love to visit. If I were to come up with a top 3 (in no particular order) it would be: France, Japan, England. These are 3 countries I haven’t been to that are on my bucket list.
Thanks, Marla!

Bright + Colorful Indian / American Wedding: Sarah + Sunny – Part 1

Indian Wedding

Happy Monday, guys + gals! We’re starting the week off in such a gorgeous way, with Sarah + Sunny’s stunning two part Indian / American wedding feature, captured by the ever-lovely Danielle Poff!

Sarah + Sunny debated all the pros + cons of having a two-day wedding, in order to make sure to both of their cultures felt represented in all the best ways. In the end, they decided on one big, beautiful day-long celebration since they knew if they had everything in one day, no matter how tiresome it may be, that it would be the easiest way for everyone to enjoy and appreciate both cultures. Sarah explains, We made a point of adding in a little something of both of us to each ceremony to make it more ‘us’ and we did a lot ourselves. Instead of trying to find things that encompassed both of us and our cultures, we made them together. Both officiants explained the meaning behind the minute details of both Hindu & Catholic ceremony and even the bakery was able to mimic the look of our invitation on the second tier of our cake. Our hope was that we could mesh everything together enough that during the weekend, each side would feel as comfortable as we do with each other’s traditions— especially since so many people made a pretty long journey out there for us.

Sarah wore a few super stunning dresses throughout the day, and we’re just loving this gorge two-piece number she chose for her first look with Sunny!

Tai, the elephant, was hands-down 100% a favorite aspect of the day for both Sarah + Sunny and all their guests! We love these shots Danielle captured of the wedding party and Sarah + Sunny with Tai. So, so gorgeous and fun!

One of Sarah’s fave moments of the day was when her friends and family surprised Sunny with a coordinated dance during the Sangeet – and seeing the look on his face knowing they’d been practicing for months!

The Indian ceremony looked so incredibly gorgeous! It must have been so special for all of Sarah + Sunny’s guests to partake in both their Indian Hindu celebration and their Catholic American ceremony, which you’ll see in a bit in Part 2!

Welcome back, lovelies! If you didn’t already catch Part 1 of Sarah + Sunny’s amazing Indian / American wedding celebration, be sure to check that out before moving on to Part 2 with us! Part 1 is all about their gorgeous Indian Hindu ceremony – with jaw-dropping images captured by Danielle Poff Photography of all the beauty, plus the sweetest elephant ever named Tai! In Part 2, you’ll see their beautiful sunset Catholic ceremony, along with a boho-inspired reception dinner that we think you’re going to fall in love with BIG time.

We love how this adorable duo had such a big hand in designing their day, making sure to show off both cultures throughout the entire celebration. Sarah designed the invitations + programs for both ceremonies, the table numbers, the watercolor and calligraphy escort cards and more. Sunny spray-painted ball canning jars for the Catholic ceremony, baskets for the Hindu ceremony, the card box and wine bottles for the table numbers. Together, they designed and put together the flower-girl pails and signs – and Sarah’s dad even hand-cut every cork for each placecard! To top it off, Sunny’s family put together the guest welcome bags, making the day a true family affair and celebration of love!

For their American ceremony, Sarah wore a stunning Vera Wang dress paired with glittery, gold Jimmy Choo shoes! To add a perfect pop of color, she carried a super bright and beautiful rose, peony and protea bouquet by Noonan’s Wine Country Designs!

OUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM THE WEDDING

Sunny: When I read the storybook that Sarah wrote for me about us meeting and the nervousness I felt before she walked down the aisle during the Catholic ceremony. It just all of a sudden felt real when I saw her.

Sarah: There are so many! I am torn. But one has to be the fact that there was a hawk tailing me from the moment I stepped foot in California that I knew had to be my grandfather (he absolutely would have come back as a hawk). Once my brother told the story in his speech at the Sangeet that I thought he was with us, I got texts of pictures before the Hindu and Catholic ceremonies as the same hawk circled overhead watching. My heart was so full that everybody just understood how meaningful it was to me.

Real Weddings | Los Olivos, CA

Mike and Mia met through Match.com thanks to both of their mothers, who were tired of hearing how their son and daughter could never find anyone worth dating out and about. Mia had pretty much given up on the whole thing after a bunch of nice dates with great guys that she just didn’t really get excited about. Just by chance, Mia happened to notice an email from Mike. He was funny, clearly intelligent, and just plain interesting so she responded. On their first date, she dropped a piece of raw fish on her face, and Mike broke all her date rules and then got violently ill with swine flu on the drive home. Still, they both turned up for the second date and 9 months later Mia and Mike were engaged.

They wanted a rustic wedding that still felt sophisticated. Mia and Mike really wanted their wedding to feel intimate, which they accomplished by curving the ceremony seating slightly and creating one long head table for everyone to sit at. The intimate seating was contrasted by the big openness of the venue. For the backdrop, they had the gorgeous hills and the farmhouse, which is an actual West Virginian farmhouse that was deconstructed and rebuilt in California wine country. Most of the decor and little touches were made by Mia or Etsy vendors, aside from the pieces they used from their parents’ homes and weddings.

Mazel tov, Mia and Mike!

Anna & Robert Real Wedding

By |2011-03-26T08:42:17-06:00March 26th, 2011|Real Wedding|

My mom always said less is more and she was right! Anna has such a delicate look I wanted to stay within a classic look and bring a vintage flare in. Her makeup is uber soft and making her skin look soft and adding touches of color really brought out her features without over powering her. Here are a few pics from Jose Villa Photography of Anna & Robert’s Four Seasons Biltmore wedding. Planned by Jill La Fleur of La Fleur Weddings.

Featured Stylist: Janeena

By |2010-07-30T16:20:39-06:00July 30th, 2010|Featured|

We are so excited to be doing a Featured Artist of the month!! We have some amazingly talented stylists and we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to highlight their story, and some of their accomplishments! Our first Featured Artist of the Month from July-August 2010 is: Janeena Merricks, Professional Key Makeup Artist, who has been with TEAM since 2004!

Here’s what Mar, the creative director of TEAM had to say about Janeena: “Janeena is an asset to our TEAM and we are very proud to have her in our family. I believe, to be a real makeup artist, you need to be able to create any look, on any ethnicity, at a moment’s notice, and Janeena can do that. She is the real deal! Right when you think she can’t get any better, she does.”

Q & A

Q: How long have you been a professional makeup artist?

A: I have been a professional makeup artist for six years, and I have been with TEAM for four years.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years, professionally?

A: In five years, I see myself continuing to work with celebrities, and traveling with TEAM Hair and Makeup, growing and expanding within the company. I may go into becoming a Personal Artist if the right client comes along, and one day, I’m going to create a makeup line for all women.

Q: What do you like best about working with the bridal community?

A: I love so many things about working in the Bridal industry. I have to be honest though, when I landed a meeting with TEAM Hair and Makeup, I wasn’t sure brides and weddings were for me. Needless to say, I was up for the challenge to work with TEAM, and see if it was going to be a good fit. After my first Wedding, I realized I had found a new passion! Wedding work is a different style of makeup than what I was used to, however, it is similar to being on set. There are time constraints and a bit of pressure, but, when you love what you do, it seems to just flow. In the start of my career, I went straight into working on different productions as a TV/Film makeup artist. Models and actresses were my clientele. I have done a lot of celebrity work, and loved the fast paced action, and people I have worked with. As an artist, I believe it’s vital to be able to work on any type of client doing any type of makeup. Makeup on an actress and makeup on a bride is night and day. When TEAM Hair and Makeup offered me a contract, I knew it was a turning point in my career. Working with brides and the bridal party has proven to be very rewarding. I was quick to learn that working with people on their happiest day ever, is a very positive experience. I saw how much Brides appreciated my work, and how important it was for a Bride to feel and look like herself, on her day. Bridal makeup needs to look great walking down the aisle, and look natural enough up close so her fiancé recognizes the gal he fell for! All in all, I have to say, my favorite wedding moment, is when the Bride says, “Thank you,” and loves her makeup. Now that means a lot!

Makeup by Janeena

Q: How do you like working for TEAM?

A: TEAM has kept me very busy! Working for TEAM has given me a whole new outlook on quite a few things in my life, including family. Now, I don’t believe it necessary to be related, in order to be considered family. At TEAM, we all work together flawlessly, and we are all there for one another. The company has a very high standard for their artists and they are extremely selective with who they work with, so I’m very proud to be part of the TEAM. Plus it’s a blast! Being with TEAM has opened up so many doors for me and my future to come.

Q: Who or what has been your favorite makeup experience?

A: I have been asked this question a lot, and it’s always a very hard question to answer. I would have to say, it would be when I was called to do Rosario Dawson’s makeup. I have always wanted to do work with her. I admire her for being a strong independent woman, who also happens to be very beautiful and very down to earth. The makeup I did on her was to simply enhance her natural beauty, and she loved the way she looked!

Janeena & Rosario Dawson

Q: What is your favorite product?

A: My all time favorite product is a highlighter by, Joe Blasco. The reason why I love it so much is it can be used in many different ways. I love to highlight under the brow bone, highlight on cheekbones, highlight on the inner corner of the eye, use it as a primer for eye shadow, use it for contouring on the nose, and use it for concealing and brightening under the eye. What more can a girl ask for? I love it!

Q: What advice would you give brides to prepare to have their makeup professionally done?

A: My advice to all brides is to know exactly what you want, and if you don’t know what you want, leave it to the artist to help guide you. For inspiration look online. I suggest stylemepretty.com, santabarbaraweddingguide.com and theknot.com. Really think about how you want to look in your photos and walking down the aisle. Also, don’t be afraid to ask the artist questions about their background. Do they specialize in weddings, or it is just filler work? Ask for their portfolio, Google their name, look up reviews. Be sure you have a real professional bridal makeup artist. Most importantly, you need to be able to trust your artist. It’s a very important relationship; after all, they are big part of how you look on your wedding day! As the bride you should feel relaxed and calm while you are getting your makeup done. In the end, once you have looked at yourself in the mirror, see if you feel like yourself. If you do, great, however, if you don’t, let your artist know. As a professional artist it’s our job to listen to our clients, it is all about you, the bride. The feeling at the end of your trial should be the feeling you get when you try on the right wedding dress, you know when it’s “the one.” You should feel this way with your artist too. Oh yea, and have fun!

Q: What is your makeup philosophy?

A: My makeup philosophy is, as much as we love all the latest fancy products, it’s more about how you can use it and enhance one’s natural beauty, which, for me makes a true artist.

Photo shoot with Jasmine Star

By |2010-07-25T09:00:34-06:00July 25th, 2010|Photo shoot|

We were thrilled with the opportunity to work with Jasmine Star at a really cool location in LA, called the Marvimon. We had a blast doing non-traditional makeup and hair. We did different looks from dramatic sexy looks, to fun bubble-gum pink lips, to heads wrapped in touile, using feathers, flowers, lace and fun jewelry in the hair. Check it out!
