A Joyful Personalized California Wedding, featured on Martha Stewart Weddings

This utterly gorgeous wedding, featured on Martha Stewart Weddings, beamed love, joy, and dreams of Tuscany (Sunstone Villa helped to make those visions become a reality)…

Alongside planners from RMBO Collective, Geáda, creative director for Marie Forleo, and Bryan, a senior production coordinator for Walt Disney Animation Studios, worked to create an event with a “sense of presence,” where “guests could lose themselves in celebration.” They opted for a color palette of black and white with accents of pink and peach, and made every decision based on the idea of throwing a “Hell Yes” wedding—one where they included only details and elements that they absolutely loved and could say “hell, yes!” to.

Martha Stewart Weddings Feature with Carats and Cake

carats and cake / martha weddings feature

It’s no secret that we love Carats and Cake ( see our features here!) , so when Founder and CEO, Jess Levin married Kevin Conroy we were honored to style her hair and makeup. And voila…! Their chic and modern Southern California wedding is now in the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings.

Around their fourth anniversary, on a quintessential fall day in Laguna Beach, when the temps were in the 70s and a light breeze blew down the coast, they made things official. On November 14, 2015, Jess and Kevin fused the aesthetics of New York City (where they live) with Southern California (where they wed) for their big day at the Montage Laguna Beach hotel. With 100 of their nearest and dearest, the formal affair was part of an intimate wedding weekend that brought everyone together, beginning with a fiesta-themed welcome party.

Martha Stewart Weddings Feature / The Style Issue

martha stewart weddings magazine feature

We are beside ourselves with this feature in the latest issue of Martha Stewart Weddings / The Style Issue!  It was an honor to do hair and makeup for this gorgeous and joyful multi-cultural wedding; the bride, Hana, in a word…stunning. The couple’s story is one to behold…

It’s not surprising that Olu Ajijola, a cardiologist, and Hana Malek, then a trauma nurse, first met in an intensive care unit. It was 2009, and Olu, newly arrived in Los Angeles from Boston, came to Hana’s ICU to consult on a patient; he quickly found excuses to return to “check on him.” “I thought she was beautiful, and her eyes really struck me,” he recalls. The two had their first date three weeks later and were soon a couple.

Other events at an ER two years later turned out to be just as fateful. Hana had suddenly become ill and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. “Her voice on the phone, scared and sounding poorly, was one of the hardest things I’ve ever listened to,” says Olu. He rushed to see her, and they exchanged a wordless hug. “It felt like an eternity,” says Hana. “We’d known we loved each other, but we hadn’t made the leap to feeling we wanted to end our lives together. That night started us on the path.”

The two wine and nature lovers found the perfect venue in the Vintage Ranch, 200 miles northwest of their home in L.A., with its views of rolling hills, olive groves, and vineyards… Few knew that Olu had carried that idea even further, engraving lines from Hana’s electrocardiogram into his ring to have her heartbeat always near.

Elizabeth and Matthew

For Elizabeth and Matthew the good things in life — oranges, avocados, and true love — can be found in Ojai. As a tribute to their SoCal alma mater, where they met, they designed their wedding around the school’s colors, orange and green.

On the big day, guests were greeted with citrus cocktails, and Elizabeth walked down an aisle lined with foliage and oranges. The theme continued to the reception, where tables were decorated with arrangements of fiery flowers and even more oranges.

The Invitation

Invitations, designed by Lisa “Ceci” Johnson at Ceci New York, featured fancy flourishes and a custom crest that includes “things important to us,” says the bride. “Like horses, an orange tree, an anchor for Matt’s love of sailing, and a toad — our high school mascot.”

Save the Date

Booklets with letterpressed wood-grain paper covers were mailed to loved ones to spread the news.

Bridal Party

The bride is flanked by her pals (in Vera Wang frocks), two of whom accessorized with cowboy boots.

Bridesmaid Bouquets

Each of Elizabeth’s nine bridesmaids carried a bouquet of tulips, gardenia foliage, rosemary, ranunculus, freesia, and oregano tied in orange ribbon

Groomsmen

Groomsmen, in J. Crew Suits, Hermes ties, and Sperry Top-Sider for J. Crew loafers, kick back with cold beverages.

The Boutonnieres

Rose hips, rose buds, Gomphrena ‘Strawberry Fields,’ and oregano added a bright pop to the men’s lapels.

The Location

The couple returned to the idyllic orange groves surrounding Thacher, their alma mater in Ojai, to exchange vows. They wanted to be reminded of the time they spent riding horses and snacking on fresh fruit in this very location.

To create “Thacher” the horse, florist and event designer Mindy Rice filled a life-size topiary frame with hay. The party animal “made his debut at the rehearsal dinner wearing New Mexican riding blankets,” says Mindy, then showed up at the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, each time sporting new attire.

Ceremony Programs

The wedding program, held here by Elizabeth’s brother, outlines the ceremony, gave a shout-out to the couple’s parents and grandparents, and thanked the Thacher School.

Ceremony Decor

A bustling arrangement in shades of tangerine, pink, and green adds a bright pop of color to the stone bridge leading to the ceremony site.

Vows with a View

With its spectacular vista of the Ojai Valley, Thacher’s Outdoor Chapel requires scant adornment. Simple touches, like a garland of fresh oranges and foliage draping from the podium, feel organic and natural.

Just Married

The couple share a private moment. “We knew we had to get married at Thacher to bring everything full circle,” says the bride.

The Reception

Guests headed to Ojai Valley Inn & Spa for the wedding reception. Foliage, fruit, and leafy wreaths on the chandeliers transform the inn’s ballroom into a lovely orchard.

Cocktail Hour

Chilled melon-mint soup provided refreshment for friends and family

Table Settings

Earthy linens and iridescent taupe charger plates offered a sleek, muted balance to vibrant flowers.

Reception Decor

Slatted wood boxes filled with fruit and orange blossoms brought fragrance and color to the cocktail tables.

Custom Headpiece

The bride’s custom headpiece used the same hand-painted fabric as one of the layers in her silk-and-tulle Vera Wang gown.
