We are so excited about being apart of Jose’s Mexico workshop again this November! Below is the Announcement featured on Style Me Pretty!

Jose Villa Workshop Announcement

June 9th. 2011 by Abby LarsonFiled Under20 comments

It’s been a Jose Villa kind of day here on SMP. With one perfect piece of wedding candy after another. Well, we’re wrapping up this Jose party with one last burst of gorgeousness along with the official announcement of his next intensive photography workshop, being held November 13-17th of 2011. An opportunity of a lifetime to learn from the best of the biz and experience wedding beauty at an entirely new level. Here is a peak of his last workshop, where Joy Thigpen whipped together one of the most lovely engagement and wedding photoshoots I have ever seen. And I’ve seen quite a few. Click here to see all of the gorgeous goodness.

And the amazing (seriously, you might die of envy after seeing the experience that these lucky photographers got to have)…

The next workshop is being held November 13-17th, 2011 and will include such superstars as Kate ofFlower WildKarina Puente, Mar of TEAM Hair and MakeupJoel Serrato FilmsJill La Fleur. Oh and you just might get an appearance by yours truly. That’s right. I’m packing up and heading to Mexico to experience this incredible, once in a lifetime workshop, gabbing about getting your weddings published and using the internet to really allow your brand to thrive.

Jose’s workshops have been known to sell out within MINUTES of their official announcement so if I were you, I would head right over to his site and reserve yourself a space. After speaking to about 10 attendees from this last workshop, I can tell you that they were giddy…bursting at the seams excited to apply all of the knowledge and experience that Jose shared. If you can swing it, this workshop truly is a career changing experience.Vendors who contributed to the above shoot…

Metropolitan Building Photo Shoot by Jill La Fleur + CLY Creation

June 22nd. 2011 by ErinFiled Under12 comments

Who knew pink + lavender could be such a smashing combo? And set against the backdrop of the Metropolitan Building with it’s exposed brick and perfectly peeling walls, this styled shoot is fast becoming our favorite and is positively brimming with fabulous details for you to infuse into your own big day. Perhaps it’s the lavender dress that you take away from this (we’re dying over that number), the single blooms at each place setting or maybe the feathers are what really caught your eye? Styled by the virtuoso of wedding decor, Jill La Fleur with photography by Matthew Lee of CLY Creation, FABULOUS hair and makeup by Mar of TEAM Hair & Makeup and gorgeously crafted paper goods by none other than Ceci New York, we have quite the gem on our hands. It’s boasting a dream palette of romantic colors mixed with gorgeous feminine details and old world charm woven throughout. J’adore to bits and bits. See it all here!

From Jill La Fleur… As soon as Matthew, the photographer, showed me images of the Metropolitan Building, inspiration for this shoot came rushing in. I fell in love with the location! The 9,00 square foot, 4 story building is filled to the brim with antiques, furniture and all sorts of collectibles that we were able to incorporate into the shoot. With huge wrap-around windows with beautiful city views, exposed brick walls with chipping paint & wood floors, we were able to create a unique, antique, ultra-romantic Victorian feel.

The colors for the table setting were ivory, creams and touches of light dusty blue/grey. I wanted the flowers to bring a pop of color to the table with shades of pink. The vibrant pink bouquet also played nicely off the lavender dress. For the escort card table, I had individual antique tea cups with a bloom in each one placed next to an antique door knob as the card holder. We also incorporated the antique door knobs next to the name tags on the table, along with ostrich feathers placed across the menus to add that bit of Victorian romance. The etched crystal with brass lids also added my favorite touch of Anthropologie to the table. For the linens, I layered a blue/grey natural linen with an antique ivory lace overlay, to give texture. I had a wonderful time visiting New York and being apart of such a wonderful shoot with such talented vendors. I can’t wait to plan a wedding at this amazing location!

They didn’t disappoint and I think there are lots of great ideas for your own “secret garden wedding.” What do you guys think – anyone want to run off and elope with your honey in a secret garden now!? 🙂

Santa Ynez Wedding by Jose Villa + Jill La Fleur + Joel Serrato, Part II

May 12th. 2011 by Abby Larson | 4 comments
I’ve always said that one of the best decisions I ever made was hiring a cinematographer to film my wedding. I still pull it out time after time to relive the day, to see our moment in a way that is so incredibly tangible. So real that it seems like I’m right there in that pretty white dress all over again. So every time we get a video to accompany a real wedding feature, we smile. And if that film happens to be from Joel Serrato, well. That smile turns into a school girl crush kind of happiness.

See what I mean? Beyond. Beyond. Beyond gorgeous. Before we jump into our buying guide, I had to share with you one more set of images from Jose Villa. We get pretty wrapped up in the details here on SMP, as we’ll always be a blog that focuses on the design and the inspiration behind all of the perfect little touches. But these images completely reminded me that sometimes the most beautiful details are the little moments of love, of beauty, of pure art behind each and every photograph.

From Jill La Fleur… I am so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country, Santa Ynez, CA…the wine country region of Santa Barbara County. People come from all over the world to visit this area for it’s perfect climate, rolling hills studded with oak trees, incredible sunsets and of course the wine and wineries!

This wedding was at a beautiful winery in this valley, Foley Winery, and the couple chose one of the most beautiful times of the year to have their wedding here…in October. This is harvest time here when the grapes are full on the vines and the sunsets fill the sky with oranges and yellows each evening. That’s where the term Harvest Moon comes from! Ashley & Michael love this area, in fact they moved here since their wedding, and so they decided to embrace the colors of the sky and the season in their wedding, which is what I loved about planning their wedding so much! The colors in their photos and film just remind me of the beautiful sunsets of this area and we incorporated lanterns, wine barrels, rustic farm tables, vintage fruit crates and lots of colorful floral to really pull together both the location and the season. And to keep the beautiful scenery and starry sky in our sights all evening, we rented a clear tent to bring in the amazing views all night!

I think these amazing photos and this romantic film capture it all! Congats to Ashley & Mike…best wishes for a colorful, beautiful future together and welcome to paradise!

Santa Ynez Wedding by Jose Villa + Jill La Fleur + Joel Serrato, Part I

May 12th. 2011 by Abby Larson | 10 comments

You guys know what tends to happen to me when I get my hands on a Jose Villa wedding. I turn into a five year old who just took her first steps inside a candy store. Giddy, flustered, squealing here and there for no particular reason. Well, that’s exactly what I did when I opened my email to see this gem of a wedding sitting there all perfect and pretty. Then I saw the vendor list…Jill La FleurJoel SerratoModern Day DesignTeam Hair & Makeup and that five year old inside of me? Well, let’s just say that I had to put her in timeout to calm her down. We’ve got a full day of gorgeousness for you from Jose and crew and we’re topping off everything with an incredible buying guide. Because let’s face it, not everyone can have Jill La Fleur and Modern Day Designs craft your wedding! So without further blabbing, let’s get started. Oh and you can click here to see even more.

He Proposed!!!

So here’s the story: After we chose Caleb and Bethany to come shoot with us, we get this email from Caleb asking: would it be ok with us if he pops the question during our photoshoot? Um….YES!!!! So we concocted a plan and were all giddy all day since everyone but Bethany knew what was going on (though none of us more than Caleb who had a ring burning a whole in his pocket!). By the time we got to our last location (the location) he just couldn’t wait any longer…. “Do you have the note? Do you have the note? Can I ask her now???”

So I imagine this as the scene for the wedding ceremony. Something out under the trees with strings of white paper birds radiating from a point above and behind the couple’s heads. We just tied ours into the branches the tree provided. This modern/rustic/minimalist look is all about using humble materials in simple and understated ways.

By the way, do you remember a little while ago when we asked for some readers to come shoot with us in Santa Ynez? Bethany and Caleb answered the call all the way from Virginia Beach! They were so great in this mini shoot. And be sure to check back in Wednesday…you’re gonna melt when you see what happened in their other shoot! 🙂

Dove Template

Here’s a template for the doves if you’d like to make this yourself.

INSTRUCTIONS: Just print these onto 11×14 card stock, cut them out and string them up! We used white cotton twine from a hardware store and poked two little holes in the center near the front and back to thread each bird. To help create the feeling of flight, I folded a crease along the middle of about two-thirds of the birds and left maybe a third flat. For half of the folded birds, I created a little paper bridge that attached to each wing and strung the twine through the bridge and that made the birds whose wings are up. Thanks to Jessica Carberry for drawing the template and cutting out all those birds!

Jose Villa Workshop + A Jill La Fleur Workshop

April 19th. 2011 by Abby Larson | Filed Under13 comments

What do you get when you put Jose VillaJill La FleurFlowerwild and Mar of TEAM Hair and Make Up in a room together? You get this. A crazy beautiful, overflowing with inspiration, pick your jaw up off the floor photoshoot where beauty and style is literally tucked into each and every corner. This is a look at Jose Villa’s latest photography workshop where he pulled in some of his favorite industry peeps to help craft one of the prettiest shoots I think I’ve ever seen. Honestly. So pretty that I couldn’t narrow down the images at all so I have like 15 cake pictures and even more bouquet shots because they were just too beautiful to end up on the cutting room floor. Click here to see even more.

I’ve worked with Jose for years and have such respect and high-regard for what he does and have been thrilled to be asked to be a guest speaker at his previous workshops, including this one, over the years. But being invited to style the inspiration shoot for this workshop was such a huge honor and I couldn’t wait to begin the planning of a unique, beautiful design that fit both his style and that of the amazing location, the Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse!

My inspiration started with the idea of combining two very different looks: a soft, romantic anthropology style mixed with a more industrial, masculine Restoration Hardware feel. And working with Kate of Flowerwild was amazing! She and I had so much fun working together to come up with unique ideas to make this juxtaposition work! For the romantic side, we incorporated floral in soft tones of peaches and blushes and silvery sage greens with cut crystal containers, delicate crystal stemware, a hand-made thick crocheted lace runner, billowy pillows and lace runners for the benches (which we tied down with lace ribbon and bells!) and beautiful vintage “found” bottles with antique keys/toppers. The brides had delicate dresses by Claire Pettibone with custom-made hair pieces by Lo Boheme that gave a romantic, vintage feel in a very rustic setting. Mar with Team Hair and Makeup did a beautiful job finishing off their look!

The invitation suite had delicate peach lace details to finish off the look. And the “ruffle” cake on the delicate vintage cake stand was perfect!

For the more industrial side, we incorporated cast concrete containers for some of the floral, gray linens, bells, heavy “reused” marine ropes mixed with the delicate lace fabrics for the Ceremony site, a rusty vintage bed spring for the escort cards (which I added lace to in order to soften it), the great heavy stone place settings and silverware. I love mixing looks and feels at my events and this combination I felt fit the stunning rustic location and the soft, romantic style of Jose’s beautiful photography. The workshop attendees were all so excited to be not only in the presence of Jose, soaking in every little bit of information he had to share, but also to be able to shoot side-by-side with him at such an amazing location and with such lovely details. Being on the guest panel afterwards with such amazing vendors as Joel SerratoTeam Hair & Makeup, Amy of Wedding ChicksRichard Photo Laband of course, Jose, ended a perfect workshop day! I can’t wait for the next one!! Photographers out there…it’s worth more than you could imagine!

* * *

So speaking of amazing photography workshops, the fabulous Jill La Fleur is hosting one of her very own…and it’s RIGHT around the corner. Jill has pulled together an amazing collection of vendors and experts to host an overnight workshop at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, May the 3rd.

Together with some of the industries coolest (including yours truly, ahem), Jill will be conquering all of those much needed topics from Branding, Marketing and Packaging your Business to Getting Published. Jose Villa will be on hand to instruct the class on capturing the details and I’ll be Skype chatting in a live Q & A session!

Spaces are VERY limited so make sure to sign up asap! And make sure to check out Jose’s workshopon the 13th of September!
