Kate Holt of Flowerwild and Rebecca Stone of Duet Weddings teamed up to create this floral photo shoot for Martha Stewart Weddings. I love the modern bohemian twist they gave it (how cool is that urban greenhouse?). Photos by Jose Villa.

He Proposed!!!

So here’s the story: After we chose Caleb and Bethany to come shoot with us, we get this email from Caleb asking: would it be ok with us if he pops the question during our photoshoot? Um….YES!!!! So we concocted a plan and were all giddy all day since everyone but Bethany knew what was going on (though none of us more than Caleb who had a ring burning a whole in his pocket!). By the time we got to our last location (the location) he just couldn’t wait any longer…. “Do you have the note? Do you have the note? Can I ask her now???”

INSPIRATION: Outdoor Wedding, Paper Birds

So I imagine this as the scene for the wedding ceremony. Something out under the trees with strings of white paper birds radiating from a point above and behind the couple’s heads. We just tied ours into the branches the tree provided. This modern/rustic/minimalist look is all about using humble materials in simple and understated ways.

By the way, do you remember a little while ago when we asked for some readers to come shoot with us in Santa Ynez? Bethany and Caleb answered the call all the way from Virginia Beach! They were so great in this mini shoot. And be sure to check back in Wednesday…you’re gonna melt when you see what happened in their other shoot! 🙂

Dove Template

Here’s a template for the doves if you’d like to make this yourself.

INSTRUCTIONS: Just print these onto 11×14 card stock, cut them out and string them up! We used white cotton twine from a hardware store and poked two little holes in the center near the front and back to thread each bird. To help create the feeling of flight, I folded a crease along the middle of about two-thirds of the birds and left maybe a third flat. For half of the folded birds, I created a little paper bridge that attached to each wing and strung the twine through the bridge and that made the birds whose wings are up. Thanks to Jessica Carberry for drawing the template and cutting out all those birds!

Jose Villa Workshop + A Jill La Fleur Workshop

April 19th. 2011 by Abby Larson | Filed Under13 comments

What do you get when you put Jose VillaJill La FleurFlowerwild and Mar of TEAM Hair and Make Up in a room together? You get this. A crazy beautiful, overflowing with inspiration, pick your jaw up off the floor photoshoot where beauty and style is literally tucked into each and every corner. This is a look at Jose Villa’s latest photography workshop where he pulled in some of his favorite industry peeps to help craft one of the prettiest shoots I think I’ve ever seen. Honestly. So pretty that I couldn’t narrow down the images at all so I have like 15 cake pictures and even more bouquet shots because they were just too beautiful to end up on the cutting room floor. Click here to see even more.

I’ve worked with Jose for years and have such respect and high-regard for what he does and have been thrilled to be asked to be a guest speaker at his previous workshops, including this one, over the years. But being invited to style the inspiration shoot for this workshop was such a huge honor and I couldn’t wait to begin the planning of a unique, beautiful design that fit both his style and that of the amazing location, the Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse!

My inspiration started with the idea of combining two very different looks: a soft, romantic anthropology style mixed with a more industrial, masculine Restoration Hardware feel. And working with Kate of Flowerwild was amazing! She and I had so much fun working together to come up with unique ideas to make this juxtaposition work! For the romantic side, we incorporated floral in soft tones of peaches and blushes and silvery sage greens with cut crystal containers, delicate crystal stemware, a hand-made thick crocheted lace runner, billowy pillows and lace runners for the benches (which we tied down with lace ribbon and bells!) and beautiful vintage “found” bottles with antique keys/toppers. The brides had delicate dresses by Claire Pettibone with custom-made hair pieces by Lo Boheme that gave a romantic, vintage feel in a very rustic setting. Mar with Team Hair and Makeup did a beautiful job finishing off their look!

The invitation suite had delicate peach lace details to finish off the look. And the “ruffle” cake on the delicate vintage cake stand was perfect!

For the more industrial side, we incorporated cast concrete containers for some of the floral, gray linens, bells, heavy “reused” marine ropes mixed with the delicate lace fabrics for the Ceremony site, a rusty vintage bed spring for the escort cards (which I added lace to in order to soften it), the great heavy stone place settings and silverware. I love mixing looks and feels at my events and this combination I felt fit the stunning rustic location and the soft, romantic style of Jose’s beautiful photography. The workshop attendees were all so excited to be not only in the presence of Jose, soaking in every little bit of information he had to share, but also to be able to shoot side-by-side with him at such an amazing location and with such lovely details. Being on the guest panel afterwards with such amazing vendors as Joel SerratoTeam Hair & Makeup, Amy of Wedding ChicksRichard Photo Laband of course, Jose, ended a perfect workshop day! I can’t wait for the next one!! Photographers out there…it’s worth more than you could imagine!

So speaking of amazing photography workshops, the fabulous Jill La Fleur is hosting one of her very own…and it’s RIGHT around the corner. Jill has pulled together an amazing collection of vendors and experts to host an overnight workshop at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, May the 3rd.

Together with some of the industries coolest (including yours truly, ahem), Jill will be conquering all of those much needed topics from Branding, Marketing and Packaging your Business to Getting Published. Jose Villa will be on hand to instruct the class on capturing the details and I’ll be Skype chatting in a live Q & A session!

Spaces are VERY limited so make sure to sign up asap! And make sure to check out Jose’s workshopon the 13th of September!

Featured on Jose Villa Blog! Tamera Mowry and Adam Housley Engaged

By |2011-04-16T19:06:39-06:00April 16th, 2011|Featured|

Recently, I teamed up with Jose & Tamera of Sister Sister to do her hair and makeup for her engagement session up in Santa Ynez. Tamera has a beautiful skin tone & I wanted to make sure her natural beauty came through, so we kept her hair and makeup very natural for the shoot. I think this is important,  to make sure you look like yourself for your engagment photos. I had a blast working with Tamera and am looking forward to her wedding next month! Below is Jose’s post

Ashley & Mike Real Wedding

By |2011-03-30T08:00:54-06:00March 30th, 2011|Real Wedding|

I just loved working with Ashley, such a sweet girl! For Ashley’s hair we incorporated a few hair extensions for volume and gave her a little height for a 60’s inspired doo. It was important to her to have bounce in her hair and not too much product. Being our extensions are treated prior to placing in our brides hair, the wave or curl tends to stay for hours and hours. Ashleys hair stayed in a loose curl and with just a spritz of anti-humidfying hair spray. With Ashley’s makeup it was important to her that her eyes really popped! I swept a sheer champagne across her lid and added a warm brown on the outer corners for depth. The finishing touch was individual lashes on the corners in different lengths for a little drama and viola! A beautiful bride!”

Prim & Kris Real Wedding

By |2011-03-29T07:27:32-06:00March 29th, 2011|Real Wedding|

It’s all about the skin! Prim had such beautiful skin I wanted to be sure her look was very fresh and clean looking. Her photographer was Jose Villa and being that he shoots film, I wanted Prim to look natural with touches of color on the lips, cheek and eyes. The ole’ myth “You have to wear more makeup for photos” is so 80’s! With a talented photographer who has mastered his lighting, how you look in person is how you will look in your photos. I used a creme blush in a light pink for a natural glow on her cheeks and I used a muted apricot stain on her lips for just enough color to bring out her natural pigment. With Prim’s hair she asked for a loose curl, I gave her just that and went throughout her hair with a smaller curls for a bouncy textured look. Overall Prim was a beautiful bride who screams natural beauty.

Anna & Robert Real Wedding

By |2011-03-26T08:42:17-06:00March 26th, 2011|Real Wedding|

My mom always said less is more and she was right! Anna has such a delicate look I wanted to stay within a classic look and bring a vintage flare in. Her makeup is uber soft and making her skin look soft and adding touches of color really brought out her features without over powering her. Here are a few pics from Jose Villa Photography of Anna & Robert’s Four Seasons Biltmore wedding. Planned by Jill La Fleur of La Fleur Weddings.

Featured on Style Me Pretty!

By |2011-03-25T07:38:57-06:00March 25th, 2011|Featured|

We were excited to see that one of our beautiful brides was just featured on Style Me Pretty! Our Stylist Rachel Wall did the makeup and makeup.
It’s easy to design a pretty wedding. A few beautiful flowers, a lovely white dress, maids dressed perfectly all in a row. The hard part is designing a pretty wedding that is also deeply personal and unique. The kind of wedding that guests remember for years and years to come. The kind of wedding that was built by a bride and groom who wanted their day to reflect their own unique vision and style. And yet those are just the kind of weddings that have us swooning here at SMP…and it just happens to be the kind of wedding that this next little number is. Perfectly beautiful and yet undeniably personal. Love, love, love. Click here to see even more.

Jacob and I really wanted to have a wedding that was very personal, intimate and all about the joining of two families. The idea of a destination wedding where we could spend quality time with our friends and family for a whole weekend seemed just about perfect.  With both our families from Oregon, and the fact that I own a wedding shop in Portland (which would have made choosing vendors nearly impossible), we decided to head south to Ojai, California and bring our friends and family with us.

Once we decided to have a destination wedding, Ojai, became the obvious choice. The town has special meaning to my family as my Great-grandma lived there for most of her life, and currently my Grandma lives in Ojai.  The Ojai Valley Inn was the perfect backdrop for the ceremony, reception and the wedding weekend.  We could not have been more excited to spend this amazing weekend in such a gorgeous location.

I am named after a bird and my brothers and sisters all have bird names as well, so it was no surprise that we went with a “love birds” theme.  We wanted our wedding to be very “us”.  We wanted our guests to think, that is so Petrel and Jacob! After deciding the look would be a love affair between Anthropologie and J.crew, where romance meets vintage, the colors became shades of gray, peach, pinks and ivory. I actually saw a blog post of a photo shoot on SMP and it all clicked – the photos were exactly what I was envisioning but had been having a hard time describing it! Once I realized that the florist, Lauryl Lane, from the photo shoot was from California (how lucky is that!?), I decided it was a match made in heaven and hoped she would be able to do the flowers for my wedding. Lucky for us, she was available, and the flowers and colors fell into place.

Making our wedding personal was really important to us so we decided to tackle quite a few projects. My mom decided to sew the flower girl dresses, the runners, the welcome bags, and pillows for the reception (my mom was amazing and probably went to the fabric store 25 times during our engagement to make all these projects).  For the reception, we decided on one long family style table to make it more intimate, and we brought our family’s china to use at the reception for the chargers.  Even though I think many people thought I was crazy to pack up and bring the china from Oregon to CA,  it was an idea that just seemed too wonderful to pass up.   We made the sign above the cake,  our friends made the pottery cake stand, my bridesmaids (my sisters and girlfriends since first grade) helped put together the favors, and Jacob and I created our own playlists for the cocktail hour, dinner and dancing.

The stationery part was easy because I own a boutique in Portland called The Wedding Cottage, and we specialize in invitations and accessories! We were able to get our invitations, menus, placecards, napkins, and gifts from my store which made it even more special and personal.  We designed a love birds themed letterpress invitation and a postcard RSVP, which was in mad-libs style! It was so much fun to read what everyone had written that we decided to frame everyone’s rsvp cards at our reception on a refurbished window frame.

For the ceremony we had Jacob’s brother officiate and we incorporated a poem that my dad had written to us into the ceremony.  Jacob and I wrote our own vows, and then included the guests into the ceremony by giving them two hershey kisses inside of a paper maiched egg (my mom actually paper maiched each individual egg, she really was amazing!) One hershey kiss we all ate together right there at the ceremony to enjoy “the sweetness of the day”, the other kiss was actually made out of pewter (made by my parents who are pewtersmiths).  We told our guests to hold onto the pewter kiss, and if there is ever a time in the future where Jacob and I started to forget how happy we were on this day, they should give us this kiss and it will remind us how in love we are.

With an amazing ceremony filled with laughter and tears, yummy cocktails and appetizers,  a plated dinner under the stars, fantastic toasts by our sisters, and lots of dancing and cake,  we couldn’t have asked for a more magical evening. We definitely had the love and energy of family and friends behind us, and couldn’t have done it without them.  The best part of it all though, was that I got to marry Jacob!

Kathleen & Glen

Four Seasons Biltmore Resort

By Kristen Grinnell:

What better way to finish off a decade of being together than to get married. That’s exactly what Kathleen and Glen did this summer at the gorgeous Four Seasons Biltmore Resort.  Kathleen and Glen both grew up in Santa Barbara and she told me she used to play at Butterfly beach as a kid and dream about her wedding one day to a handsome man at that “really pretty place” across the street.  It was giggles and happy tears when her day finally arrived. Kathleen is a do-it-yourselfer at heart so when I heard she actually did all the flowers the day before, I was seriously impressed! The night went off without a hitch, thanks to flawless coordination by the lovely Natasha and Samantha of Occasions Event Planning. I asked Kathleen and Glen later on if she had the wedding of their dreams … she just giggled and kissed her handsome groom.
