A Bohemian Black-Tie Wedding: Diana + Josh

Monday, August, 1, 2011 16 Comments

I’m so excited to start the week off with this gorgeous bohemian black-tie wedding. Diana is a food stylist and Josh is a photographer, so you can imagine how unique + beautiful their wedding will be! A whimsical, warm and inviting environment with plenty of flowers and candlelight. Clean, crisp design meets natural, wild beauty is how they described their wedding and I think you guys are going to just love it! So much thought was put into the day! Thanks so much to Cristen + Scott of W. Scott Chester photography for letting me share their amazing photos.

Gorgeous bouquet + dress! Diana’s dress started out as a St. Pucchi dress that she pretty much cut up into a million pieces and completely redesigned + put back together! Amazing…

How gorgeous are the bridesmaids!? Diana shared with me that her bridesmaids, mother and mother-in-law all live in different parts of the country and world. So as a gift to them, Diana hired a yoga teacher to come to their hotel on Venice Beach the morning of the wedding and start the day off with a private yoga class. What a fun and perfect way to relax before the wedding! She also gave them each custom yoga pants as a gift from pretty penny designs etsy shop and robes from plum pretty sugar!

Most memorable moment of your wedding day? Signing the Ketubah surrounded by our immediate family and bridal party. My bridesmaid Sarah, a professional violinist, was playing softly in the background and it completely calmed our nerves and set the tone going into the ceremony.

Josh and I wanted to give our guests the true Venice Beach experience, so we decided to rent a restored English double-decker bus to transport from Hotel Erwin to the Smog Shoppe and back at the end of the night.

double-decker-bus wedding

The idea for our cocktail hour is that we wanted it to feel like a giant, inviting living room. We layered tons of vintage Persian rugs we’ve collected over the past year over the concrete floor and had hundreds of lit candles for a romantic feel. Heirloom LA served champagne and passed appetizers as well as a stationary crostini bar with meats and cheeses they cure and smoke themselves. YUM!

I LOVE this idea! Escort cards/Wedding Favors: We decided to give vintage bow-ties and vintage silk scarves to our guests as combo escort cards and wedding favors. We scoured ebay and every vintage clothing store in town and managed to find enough actual vintage good condition ones we were so thrilled that we pulled it off! We also made custom clothing labels that our friend Aimee sewed on to each bow-tie/scarf that said “D+J.”

Diana + Josh rented a vintage restored VW camperbus for their honeymoon (driving up the Cali coast!). They got to thinking how cute it would be if they could park the camper bus right in the courtyard of the Smog Shoppe. The Smog Shoppe let them to that, so Diana + Josh decided to use it as a photo booth during the reception and then as their getaway car after the wedding! How fun! 🙂

Any advice for those planning now? Know both your strengths and limitations. If you think you can do it, you probably can! If you know you’re not capable without a little help, select your vendors with the same mindset the Harvard admissions board accepts their students — you’re looking for vendors who are tricks of all trades, or absolute masters in their respective industries. I remember after our tasting with Heirloom LA telling Matt & Tal that they could pretty much just show up and I’d be happy. Everything they put in front of us was the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. Consequently I didn’t know (or care that I didn’t know!) what our vegetarian option was going to be until the day before our wedding. You can’t put a price on that kind of trust!

Along the same lines, we wanted to put a BIG thank you out there to Loop Haro of Dovetail Coordination by TACT. He went from being in charge of our day of coordination to talking me down after I’d locked myself out of our house and trapped myself in our backyard the day before our wedding to making sure one of his valet guys could escort us back to our hotel in our VW camper bus/photobooth after the wedding. There is NOTHING that phases this guy. He’d get into Harvard if it were up to me.

I’d like to also note that Diana + Josh are debuting a project they’ve been working on for the past few years: Casa de Perrin – a boutique rental company. From Diana, We provide a certain art and soul of setting a table or decorating a room without limitations for brides, event planners, designers, photographers and small dinner parties. Our one-of-a-kind, bohemian-eclectic collections span continents and time periods. We are very excited to be officially up and running! 🙂

Thanks so much Diana + Josh and we wish you both a lifetime of happiness!!

Maui Wedding Featured on Style Me Pretty!

By |2011-08-01T12:49:05-06:00August 1st, 2011|Featured|

I know that I go a little bride-gaga on the site every now and then (okay, all the time) and it’s rare that the groom gets nearly as much gushing as he should. I know, I’m working it. But I’m failing miserably. Yes, the groom is dreamy and handsome and I’m sure he’s amazing. And based on the total catch of a bride he got, he’s probably really, really wonderful. But once again, I can’t stop staring at the women behind this beautiful wedding. The bride that is basically a model, the bridesmaid that is absolute cuteness and the mothers who have redefined the word elegance for me. And with a backdrop like the Maui perfection that Jill LaFleur created and photographs that Wendy Laurel snapped, this little fete is one that has quickly climbed to the top of my list. Click here to see the entire gallery of images!!

From Wendy Laurel PhotographyA beautiful Maui wedding – a blend of traditional, Korean, and Island styles.  The bride and groom are both Korean. The bride wore a beautiful traditional dress by Alma Novia at the ceremony, but both mother’s wore colorful and bright Korean traditional dresses.  The couple was married at Gannon’s Restaurant in Wailea.  The next day, the bride donned her Korean dress as well as her wedding gown and the couple did photos in the funky town of Paia, on nearby cliffs and sugarcane fields.

From the Bride…I chose Maui because we both wanted an intimate wedding far away from home.  Also, both of our parents have never been to Hawaii so we wanted them to experience it.  Of course it was everyone else’s first time too! We chose Maui because it is the most romantic Hawaiian island in my opinion.  The most important thing for me was that everyone had a memorable experience, a wedding in paradise! A wedding that you think about for a long long time.

Arabian Days Inspiration Shoot: Featured on 100 Layer Cake!

29 Jul

Your week is not complete until you’ve set eyes on Caleb the Camel, and peered into the mind of the seamlessly artistic Cortnie of Canvas & Canopy. So, might we recommend a photo shoot to haunt your oh-my-goodness-I-want-everything-in-that-shoot-to-be-in-my-wedding dreams? Alright then. We just couldn’t resist from sharing such a beaut after seeing the spread in the latest issue of Rue, shot by the incredible Jose Villa. Lucky for us, Cortnie couldn’t wait to share all the deets on how her travels to Egypt inspired the shoot!

The true inspiration for the tablescape came from the history of Egypt itself. I was so inspired by my travels to Egypt and Jordan – by all of the ancient history, artifacts and archaeological digs.

arabian days inspiration shoot

The inspiration behind the color palette came from observing how the Bedouin people of both Egypt and Jordan don their camels with brightly colored garb to serve as a colorful contrast against the stark desert. Muted grays, mustards and reds of the Wadi Rum desert were toned down, while pops of bright pink peonies served as our bold Bedouin inspiration.

For lounge décor, La Partie Events filled small bowls with vibrantly-colored spices gathered from the spice markets of Egypt & Jordan. Not only were we inspired to incorporate the raw textured sheets of papyrus, but we were really excited to use them to wrap votives and vases in. They provided the perfect texture, and we loved the way the soft candlelight peeked through.

We returned from our travels with a few alabaster vases and objects – a huge handicraft for Egyptians, and used them as containers on the table. We then scattered rock fossils and old pieces of crumbled buildings onto the table.

arabian days inspiration shoot

We incorporated gold bracelets bought from the streets of Jordan/Egypt onto the napkins – channeling a bit of Cleopatra herself. The raw earthenware plates we paired with the napkins that looked like they could have just been uncovered in an archeological dig worked perfectly. We loved the gilded gold contrast against the raw earthy archaeological table we were creating.

Momental Designs hand painted triangular pyramid like shapes onto papyrus menus and crafted papyrus napkin treatments that we wrapped around each napkin. We loved the papyrus plant so much that we incorporated it into the arrangements as well.

Large wicker peacock throne chairs were our updated version of the thrones of the Kings.

It doesn’t get any better than this. A dream team of professionals collaborating on such a shoot = the perfect amount of eye candy to get us through the weekend. Happy Friday, Cakelets!

Name: Jill La Fleur, La Fleur Weddings & Events Occupation: Wedding Planner Photographer: SimplyBloom Photography Location: Roblar Winery Santa Ynez

Inspiration for Photo Shoot: All things Marshmallows! This inspired soft, billowy, fluffy fabrics in soft creamy colors. I wanted a lot of volume  & texture throughout the shoot from the white drapes to the tablecloths.

What Color Scheme where you trying to achieve? Soft whites, cream, champagne with touches of blush and mocha

What kind of bride personality were you trying to target? Brides who love unique, outdoor weddings with a shabby chic/vintage flair

Where did you get your props? Camilla Svensson Burns and I collaborated on the overall vision. She created the floral décor brought many of the props including the pillows & some of the table settings

Thoughts of the outcome of the shoot? I am so appreciate of all the amazing vendors we worked on this shoot, including the wonderful ladies of Simply Bloom, who flew out all the way from Alabama! The shoot turned out beautifully!

Central California Chic Wedding by Jenna Marie Photography

July 12th. 2011 by ErinFiled Under10 comments
As much as I love bright colors and loads of fabulous details, sometimes it’s the understated affairs that really pique my interest. Weddings sans pomp with just a girl in a gorgeous dress and her love getting married out in the open air. A wedding just like this Ojai beauty shot by Jenna Marie Photography. It is au naturel and edited to perfection by A Tavola! See the full spread here. Ojai WeddingOjai Wedding 1Ojai Wedding 2Ojai Wedding 3Ojai Wedding 4Ojai Wedding 5Ojai Wedding 6Ojai Wedding 6
From Jenna Marie PhotographyTwin Peaks Ranch is like the private balcony off the master suite of the majestic and understated bedroom community that is beautiful Ojai, CA. So when Sara and Gary’s seasoned sense of individuality collided with this storybook secret at the foot of Ojai’s Topa Topa mountains, their party of 60 close family and friends fortuned to soak up a destination wedding infused with the effortless charm and elegance of this Spanish Mission Revival.
Upon arrival, all of the guests were greeted by the groom himself and escorted to the ceremony site. The intimate ceremony was presided over by a dear, ordained friend of many years and included the heartfelt participation of other friends and family members. Spending time with and enjoying their guests was of top priority to Gary and Sara who opted to join the cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony rather than escaping to take pictures. Gary and Sara are both foodies and delighting the palate ranked high on their list of wedding priorities. Neither they nor their guests could have been disappointed with the culinary artistry of A Tavola Catering, who offered plates of butternut squash ravioli, seared diver scallops or succulent lamb accompanied by a goat cheese salad and freshly baked bread. In keeping with the organic beauty of the Ranch, the bride and groom chose not to overwhelm their reception with linens and large arrangements, but rather highlighted the eight, dark-stained farmhouse tables by using freshly planted regional herbs as centerpieces, reflecting their love for food.
It was the affectionate atmosphere that elevated the occasion to rare heights. One might describe the evening as an elegant backyard dinner party. Yes there was a most contented, peaceful and completely imperturbable enamor between bride and groom and it certainly was a celebration of marriage. But it was the warmth that radiated from all the guests and the participation of everyone in making the day such a celebration that really set it apart. Even as the photographers, theorized to be part of the background, we departed with much more than happily married clients, but additionally with a firmly established feeling of true and meaningful friendship with Sara and Gary and lingering memories from their flawless evening at Ojai’s east end retreat under the stars.Wedding Photography: Jenna Marie Photography / Event Planning: A Tavola! / Catering: Duo Catering and Events of Santa Barbara / Location: Twin Peaks Ranch / Bride’s Shoes: DSW / Bride’s Dress:Nordstrom / Bride’s Hair + Make-up: TEAM Hair & Make-up
